High-quality tea doesn’t come from a machine. The Vitacost collection of organic teas is the result of our curator’s thoughtful and diligent work to ensure quality is priority. In fact, many of these teas are hand plucked from secluded, pristine gardens and renowned tea estates. The harvest is kept on site to carefully complete the drying process. Though a more time-consuming method, Vitacost teas are handled in small-batch blending to maintain the integrity of those precious leaves. With a human touch at every stage of the process, there’s a tasteful difference. And because the best can always be better, we’ve gone ahead and made all Vitacost teas USDA Certified Organic. Rest assured, the i’s have been dotted and teas have been crossed!

What is chai tea?
In certain parts of the world, chai literally means "tea" and what we think of chai tea is actually called masala chai. But no matter what you call it, there's no denying that this traditional beverage brings a rich flavor that's hard to forget. Chai is typically made with black tea and one or more bold, aromatic spices, such as cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, clove and black pepper fruit. Chai tea benefits both the mind and body by delivering a warming, comforting effect. To get the most out of your cup, brew with milk/dairy substitute and add your favorite sweetener. |
Benefits of black tea
All traditional, non-herbal teas are made from the Camellia sinensis plant, but it’s how they’re made that sets them apart. Black tea is made from leaves that undergo a longer oxidation process - in fact, it’s the only type of tea that’s fully oxidized, a time-consuming process that leaves behind the bold flavor you love, along with polyphenol antioxidants that may offer benefits to overall well-being. Black tea is the base for many of our favorite blends, from full-bodied Proper English Breakfast tea to comfortingly spicy Chai Time. No matter how you take it, there’s a black tea made for your taste buds. |
Benefits of green tea
Catch this: green tea traditionally contains catechins, a certain type of polyphenol antioxidant. More specifically, it contains EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which is often studied for its potential benefits to the body. Like other traditional teas, green tea is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, but does not undergo the lengthy or vigorous oxidation process used to make black and oolong teas. Green tea has been enjoyed for centuries - the pleasantly mild flavor blends well with other flavors, from fruity to sweet. |
What is pu-erh tea?
First things first, how do you pronounce it? The answer is poo-air, and although the name may elicit a few giggles at first, what’s most important is that this tea is seriously delicious. Pu-erh is made from Camellia sinensis, just like green, black and oolong teas. But unlike other varieties, pu-erh undergoes a unique fermenting process that allows the leaves to age naturally, akin to a fine wine. What results is a rich, rustic taste that makes a suitable replacement for your morning cup of java. Vitacost Organic Pu-erh takes things a step further, with the addition of organic chocolate for a whole new level of guilt-free luxury. |
What is rooibos tea?
With a name that literally means “red bush,” it’s no surprise that this herbal tea comes with a rich, vibrant color and distinct flavor to match. Made from the Aspalathus linearis plant, rooibos tea (pronounced roy-boss) is popular in southern Africa and quickly gaining popularity in Europe and the U.S. With no naturally occurring caffeine, lower levels of tannins and similar levels of potentially beneficial plant compounds found in traditional teas, rooibos tea is a favorite choice among seasoned herbal tea drinkers looking for something a little different. |
Herbal tea benefits
From chamomile and mint to Echinacea and hibiscus, the term “herbal tea” refers to many different brewed beverages made with plant parts that don’t belong to the Camellia sinensisfamily (where black, green and oolong tea come from). The benefits of herbal tea are as varied as the types you’ll find - from comforting chamomile to stimulating senna. Another benefit: if you’re a slow slipper, you’ll be glad to know that herbal teas can typically be steeped longer than other varieties. |
